These send an arc of electricity between electrodes inside a bulb filled with ionised gas. But they require a warm-up period to reach full brightness, the output deteriorates over time, and they tend to spill light into unwanted areas adjacent to the playing zone.
Modern facilities must be available on-demand, so players and spectators don’t waste valuable time waiting for lights to warm up. And residents in neighbouring areas don’t want to be disturbed with light pollution.
LEDs offer an excellent alternative, with white tones optimised for a sports environment, symmetrical and asymmetrical beam options, instant illumination, and lower energy costs. Switching to LED reduces power consumption in several ways.
